Improving food security and nutrition for seniors in BC through community-based and cultural and ethnic-based approaches

Register: Here

Summary:

Last spring, the Community-Based Seniors Services (CBSS) Nutritional Supports Provincial Working Group supported a Masters student, Mike MacNeil, MPH, in completing a literature review on community-based approaches that improve food security and nutrition/nourishment for seniors in BC and the approaches currently existing in the province.  Using the findings from this research, a condensed checklist was created for CBSS agencies which lists steps to be considered when planning a new food program or to enhance elements of an existing one.   The literature review and checklist include sections on addressing food security for culturally diverse seniors, including Indigenous groups.  In this webinar Mike will provide and overview of the research and checklist; these will also be widely distributed following the webinar.

Shabina Jahan-Chaudhary, program Coordinator at CIVERSEcity Community Resources Society, and Leo Ramirez, Community Kitchen Coordinator will discuss the work being done at DIVERSEcity in addressing challenges older adults experience in accessing culturally responsive food security supports and nutrition and outline program successes and best practices.  They will also provide insight and a community-based lens to some of the key steps outlined in the Working Group’s checklist.
