Reaching Out and Supporting People in their Homes

What’s Needed in Community

At Home Supports & Friendly Visits Transportation Assistance Access to Information & Technology

As is the case for everyone, the ability to travel plays a key role in access to services and recreation. Personal mobility and access to transportation can be a significant obstacle for a senior wanting to connect with friends and family, participate in social programs or even get out in the community for ordinary activities like shopping and dining out.

People also desire supports so they can remain independent and healthy in their own homes, and these services can take the pressure of hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living facilities to meet local needs.

What We Are Doing

Partners are working hard to provide supports to seniors in their home, so people feel independent and connected.
Activities have included:

Out & About
Increasing the capacity of this Seniors Wellness program to pick up participants at their doorsteps, in an accessible bus, to connect them with social and recreation activities.

Better at Home
Enhancing OneSky’s efforts to engage and retain volunteers to support seniors with friendly visits, grocery deliveries and transportation to health appointments.

Elders Outreach
Supporting an outreach worker with the Ooknakane Friendship Centre to reach out to elders for connections and social supports with their personal needs and goals.

Meals 2 Go
Subsidizing nutritious meals prepared by the team at the Penticton Seniors Drop In Centre and delivered by volunteers who are screened and supported by OneSky and Seniors Wellness.

Seniors TechConnect
Launching a new service that promotes digital literacy skills among older adults by providing access to technology, training and support.

Virtual Program Delivery
Promoting the creative efforts of our partners to adapt their services and use tools that give seniors the option to participate virtually in their services like grief and loss supports, arts programming, and mental wellness workshops.
